Ponder's 10-sack season - the first double-digit total by a Mustang since 2005 - ranks as the ninth highest total in program single season history. The combination of Sam Huard and Sheldon Cross produced 13,214 passing yards and 153 touchdowns - both state records - in four unparalleled seasons at Kennedy Catholic High School, from 2017 to 2021. They'll chase that same success in the FCS. Huard - a former five-star recruit, who announced a decision to enter the transfer portal after two seasons at Washington on Jan. 10 - will transfer to FCS Cal Poly, he announced on the "Brock and Salk" show on Seattle Sports Station 710 AM Monday.

In the Big Sky Conference, Huard will reunite with Cross - who agreed to become Cal Poly's offensive coordinator this month after seven successful seasons as head coach at Kennedy Catholic. "Obviously the relationship with coach Cross I've had throughout my high school career and just how much he pushed me to grow as a person and as a player," Huard said Monday morning. " So, less than two years after enrolling at UW early as a five-star recruit, is looking for an offense that is familiar. "That [air raid system at Cal Poly] definitely also had a big impact on my decision," Huard said. "I've had two different systems in two years. I know if I was going to go choose another place where I'd have to learn a third system in three years there's obviously a lot of challenges with that." - Seattle Times

Sam Huard's story is not unique. Granted, there are certainly exclusive elements - how his father (Damon) and uncle (Brock) both starred in Seattle, cultivating a legacy of prolific quarterback play; how his last name became inextricably bound to a program as well as a position; how he set the state's prep passing record (with 13,214 yards) in his final game before enrolling early at Washington; how a ranking, a reputation and an expectation sat on the shoulders attached to his prized left arm. But Huard's transfer fits with the larger trend. Indeed, the redshirt sophomore - who announced Tuesday he'll enter the transfer portal - is one of 13 quarterbacks ranked as a five-star recruit by the 247Sports Composite between the 2018 and 2021 classes. And of those 13 celebrated slingers, eight have since searched for a second home.

That list includes Heisman Trophy winners Trevor Lawrence, Bryce Young and Caleb Williams, a top draft pick in Justin Fields … and a graveyard filled with failed marriages. Which doesn't mean Huard - or Uiagalelei - are destined for perpetual disappointment. Fields, Williams, Rattler and Nix have each found a measure of success at their second stops. But it does reveal an unfortunate fact surrounding the ongoing quarterback carousel: whether via the transfer portal or the high school ranks, signal callers are constantly coming to take your job. NOV 21 BIG SKY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: David Meyer (Cal Poly),...Cal Poly's David Meyer recorded double-digit tackles for the third time this season with 11 stops (7 solo, 4 assisted) in the 49-42 win over Portland State. He also notched his first career Mustang interception, halting Portland State's final drive of the game. Meyer also stopped Portland State on a 4th-and-4 play when Nathan West was stopped for a one-yard gain to the Cal Poly 33-yard line, turning the ball over to Cal Poly midway through the third quarter and preserving Cal Poly's 28-21 lead. NOV 21 BIG SKY CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cal Poly's Spencer Brasch passed for a career-high 415 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-42 victory over Portland State this past Saturday, snapping an eight-game losing skid for the Mustangs in the process. Brasch's 415 yards are the fourth-most for a single game in Cal Poly history, while he finished with 2,604 yards through the air for the year, which ranks No. 2 all-time for the program. Spencer Brasch threw for 415 yards and four touchdowns, Troy Fletcher scored the winning touchdown with 14 seconds left, and Cal Poly beat Portland State 49-42 on Saturday night for its first Big Sky Conference win this season. There were five touchdowns scored between the teams in the fourth quarter. Nick West ran for two of Portland State's three fourth-quarter scores. His 36-yarder tied the game 42-42 with 2:53 remaining before Fletcher sealed it for Cal Poly (2-9, 1-7). Brasch threw two touchdown passes to Zedakiah Centers, who finished with five catches for 143 yards. Josh Cuevas had 10 receptions for 118 yards for the Mustangs. Dante Chachere threw for 97 yards with a touchdown and interception and added 137 yards on the ground with a 76-yard touchdown for Portland State (4-7, 3-5). SEPT 12 BIG SKY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jaden Jones (Cal Poly),...Cal Poly's Jaden Jones was named the Big Sky Football Offensive Player of the Week, after the redshirt freshman helped lead the Mustangs to a come-from-behind 28-27 win over San Diego. Jones threw for 393 yards and four touchdowns, becoming the first Mustang to throw for four scores in a game since 2017. With Cal Poly trailing 27-14 late in the fourth quarter, Jones orchestrated two scoring drives and capped the comeback with a 35-yard strike to Chris Coleman with 2:20 left to secure the 28-27 victory. The No. 3-rated recruit in Utah history was lost for the season in 2021 on the first play of his career. Ethan Calvert's freshman season at the University of Utah officially consisted of one game. The reality is, it lasted just one play. The linebacker made his debut for the Utes in a season-opening over Weber State last year. On the first play of his career, he tore his ACL and was lost for the season. "I actually didn't think I tore it because I didn't know what that feels like," Calvert said Wednesday afternoon after practice. "My knee popped, I ran off the field and they told me I was done." Per the 247sports composite, Calvert is the No. 3-rated recruit in Utah history, and is the program's highest-rated linebacker in a decade. Those facts came with expectations for the former Oaks Christian School (Calif.) standout, but instead, it's been quite a winding road. "It is what it is," Calvert said this week. "I'm just trying to get my knee stronger every day and learn all the plays mentally. I wanted to be good on that side, so when I came back, I could be at full speed." - Salt Lake Tribune

Sam Huard is a work in progress. There was plenty of progress Friday morning. In UW's second practice of preseason camp, Huard - a 6-foot-2, 193-pound redshirt freshman and former five-star recruit - took the bulk of the starting reps, as UW continues to split first-team snaps among its three competing quarterbacks. (Junior Michael Penix Jr. was the primary starter Thursday, while sophomore Dylan Morris took sporadic starting snaps Friday as well.) Huard made the day's most glaring mistake, staring down a wide receiver while husky nickelback Dominique Hampton dropped into coverage and nabbed an easy interception. Huard didn't hesitate to make up for that mistake.

A play later, the lefty took a shotgun snap and dropped a rainbow along the left sideline for a picturesque 56-yard touchdown to wide receiver Jalen McMillan - who had bolted past cornerback Mishael Powell. Huard added two more majestic touchdowns, serving up a floater that wide receiver Rome Odunze outmuscled corner Jordan Perryman to corral for another 56-yard score, before exposing a secondary that bit hard on play-action to locate wideout Jabez Tinae for a 70-yard catch and run. In all, it was perhaps Huard's most complete practice performance since arriving at UW - and a necessary outburst to keep him in the hunt alongside Penix and Morris. UW coach Kalen DeBoer said Thursday that the three quarterbacks will receive equal reps at least through the team's first scrimmage Aug. 13. Ultimately, the quarterback who best minimizes mistakes might start Sept. 3 against Kent State. Huard certainly didn't let one such mistake submarine his first-team opportunity Friday morning. - Seattle Times

In perhaps his most impressive display since arriving at UW last spring, Sam Huard completed 12 of 19 passes and threw for 167 yards and a touchdown Saturday (April 29), in a spring scrimmage. WR Lonyatta Alexander Jr. - his high school teammate at Kennedy Catholic - was his most productive target. Near the end of the scrimmage, Huard took a snap, looked left and unfurled a floating deep ball that Alexander pulled in with his left hand along the sideline for a 37-yard gain "It was kind of a little overthrown, so I knew if I put my hand out to go catch it I was going to catch it," Alexander said. "I felt the confidence. I felt the game slowing down as the ball was in the air. As soon as I felt the ball touch my hand I squeezed just a little bit, just to hold on to it and come down with it." It was a return home for Alexander, who transferred back from Arizona State. "Being able to come back home and feel love still from Husky fans, from my family, from Sam and his family, my teammates and everything, it felt amazing" - Seattle Times

2021 ALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE THIRD TEAM (COACHES): MLB Matt Shotwell, Cal Poly,...Shotwell (6-0, 225, Goleta, Calif./Bishop Diego High School) was Cal Poly's leading tackler for the fourth time this season, finishing with 127 stops, No. 5 all time for a single season at Cal Poly. His 345 career tackles ranks fourth in the record book and Shotwell notched 17 career games with double-digit tackles, including a career-high 19 against Idaho State. The inside linebacker scored his only touchdown as a Mustang in the Idaho State contest with a 22-yard interception return and also recorded one sack among his five tackles for lost yardage, broke up two passes and recovered a pair of fumbles. He led the Big Sky with his 127 tackles (76 solo) and 11.5 tackles-per-game average. - Cal Poly Football

Spencer Brasch threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns, and Cal Poly gave Beau Baldwin his first win as the Mustangs' head coach with a 28-17 victory over San Diego in a season opener on Saturday. Brasch was 23-of-38 passing and put the Mustangs in front for good when he threw a 35-yard TD to Chris Colman for a 14-7 lead with eight minutes left in the first half. His 9-yard pass to Xavier Moore made it 21-10 in the first minute of the fourth quarter, and Elijah Ponder capped the day with a 75-yard pick-6.

Shakobe Harper had the other Mustangs' touchdown with a 2-yard run in the first quarter. The Mustangs, who didn't play last fall, lost their only three spring games under Baldwin, who was hired after the 2019 season. After nine years as head coach at Eastern Washington, he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Cal until returning to the Big Sky Conference with Cal Poly.
